Nedra Oltz: Only primary school education is free within Canada. Colleges and universities are not free to attend. In order to get into a college of university in Canada, you have to apply, submit your high school marks, and then get in based on your grades. If your son needs special needs reading, he won't likely qualify for any university or college.If you are moving to Canada on a temporary work visa or permanent residency application then Immigration Canada would have required medical information on your family and would have explained that you are not permitted to put any undo strain on any social system. Provinces will typically require you to pay for any medical, special needs, etc. which you require upon arrival for a period of several years. Most provinces also require new immigrants to pay the foreign student fees for any college or university for a period of two (or three) years after arrival.Some elementary and high schools do have special needs programs. Educ! ation is handed by the individual provinces and you would have to contact your local school board or Ministry of Education to see which schools offer which services and discuss it with them.
