Majorie Chester: Family expectations that are grounded in reality, morality, positive attitudes, and healthy love can be a driving force that get you through the rough spots in life.Though it is the rare person who at some point does not resent extremely high expectations of his/her family, most people end up acknowledging in the end that they were fortunate to have families who even had expectations for them.One tends to do better at say, school, if one is expected to do well. It is the student with the family who has no expectations of him at all who falters more often, because he has no moral support and is forced to figure out how to believe in himself when no one else bothers to expect anything of! him at all. When a person is expected to "do the right thing," their inner honor and nobility codes tend to rise to the occasion throughout their lives.In the end, family expectations can make a person better, as they present a challenge for a person to strive to meet, even if they resent the expectations for existing at all. On the downside, family expectations that are set way too high are almost a guarantee to make a person feel like a failure....Show more
